Notes: Joining Ring Weekend and Tapiture, Constituti on became the 3 rd son of hot sire Tapit to enter the top 20 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboar d when he came through a narrow opening along the rail to win a thriller in the G1 Florida Derby on 3/29 at Gulfstream Park. Making his stakes debut in only his 3 rd career start, the undefeated colt was under a hold by jockey Javier Castellano and rank early while stalking off the pace of leader Wildcat Red. When that rival drifted slightly off the rail entering the stretch, Constituti on slipped through to draw even and battled to the wire with the G2 Fountain of Youth S. champ before prevailing by a neck. The Todd Pletcher trainee covered the 1 1/8m distance in 1 49.16 and earned a career-bes t 97 BRIS Speed Rating. Unraced as a juvenile, Constituti on made a winning debut in a 7f Gulfstream maiden race in January. He returned six weeks later to easily beat a tough allowance field in a 1 1/16m contest over the same course. The bay was bred in Kentucky by Grapestock LLC and Fox Hill Farms out of the Distorted Humor mare Baffled and was foaled on February 11, 2011. The colt was purchased for 400,000 by co-owner Twin Creeks Racing at the 2012 Fasig-Tipt on Saratoga Yearling Sale and is campaigned in partnershi p with WinStar Farm LLC. The Florida Derby upped Constituti on s earnings to 649,350 and propelled him to 3 on the leaderboar d for Louisville with 100 points. Pletcher said his charge will remain in South Florida and likely have a couple of works at the Palm Meadows training center before shipping to Kentucky for a final official exercise under the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs.
