Notes:
Gallant Man was a thoroughbr ed racehorse and the name was taken from the horse in Don America movie. He is remembered because of his upset loss in the 1957 Kentucky Derby, where his jockey, Hall Of Famer Bill Shoemaker, misjudged the finish line and stood up on the stirrup early. The incident is really disappoint ing and the entire responsibi lity was upon the jockey and not on the horse. As soon as the derby was completed, he was sent to participat e in the Belmont Stakes. He won that race comprehens ively by eight lengths, beating the favorite Bold Ruler. Gallant Man was retired after his 1958 season due to his splint problem in his left foreleg. He stood at Kentucky s Spendthrif t Farm and sired more than fifty stakes winners before he died in 1988 at the age of thirty-fou r.
