Notes: After beginning his career with three losses over New York tracks, trainer Shug McGaughey s Orb has now racked up three straight victories capped by his come-from- behind score in Gulfstream Park s 400,000 G2 Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth S. on 2/23. With John Velazquez in the irons for the first time, Orb settled well off the pace in seventh as Majestic Hussar showed the way and odds-on favorite Violence remained in close contact with the pacesetter . As Violence took command leaving the far turn, Orb circled four wide and took dead aim on the new leader. Orb put his head in front past the eighth pole and outkicked his rival to win by half a length in a final time of 1 42.24 for the 1 1/16m contest. The two were well clear of show finisher Speak Logistics, who crossed the wire 6 3/4 lengths behind Violence. The 97 Beyer Speed Figure Orb posted was 14 points higher than his previous best. By earning 50 points in his stakes debut under the new Kentucky Derby qualifying points system, Orb is virtually assured a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May and could give his Hall of Famer conditione r his best chance to win the roses since Easy Goer in 1989. Orb s winning streak began with a maiden victory at Aqueduct last November over a field that included subsequent G3 Withers S. champ Revolution ary. In his first appearance of 2013, the bay colt took a 1 1/8m allowance optional 75,000 claiming event at Gulfstream over six other Triple Crown nominees. With the 240,000 Fountain of Youth check, his career earnings now stand at 321,050. A Kentucky home bred for Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable, Orb is out of the Unbridled mare Lady Liberty and was foaled on February 24, 2010. Orb further built his reputation for going after the best during the 2013 Road to the Kentucky Derby season by winning at the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. There he beat out fellow Derby contenders Shanghai Bobby, Frac Daddy and Itsmylucky day in a very impressive race by horse and jockey. Could there be some chemistry building between Orb and Jockey John R. Velazquez
