Notes: Forced to make an additional prep in the G1 Blue Grass S. to be assured of a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate, this Todd Pletcher trainee delivered with a good runner up finish behind Java s War. The 40 qualifying points he earned gave him a total of 50 and landed him in the 12 th spot on the leaderboar d following the defection of Govenor Charlie. The G2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds on 3/30 was intended to be his final race before the 1 st Saturday in May, but a trouble-fi lled trip cost him all chance and he wound up 7 th . A precocious colt, Palace Malice was a solid second in his debut last July. But it was the impressive 3 1/2-length win at Saratoga in his second start that stamped him as a player in the division before a bucked shin ended his juvenile campaign. His sophomore season began with a runner up finish in a January Gulfstream Park optional claiming contest over a sloppy surface. In his 2-turn and stakes debut, he was wide but closed well to get the show check in the G2 Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds for which he picked up 10 Derby points. Bred in Kentucky by W. S. Farish, he was foaled on May 2, 2010. Palace Malice is from the 1 st crop of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, who was 3 rd in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, and was his sire s 1 st winner in the United States. His dam is the Royal Anthem mare Palace Rumor, a stakes winner on grass. Palace Malice was purchased for 200,000 at the 2012 Keeneland April 2-year-old s in training sale by W. Cothran Cot Campbell s Dogwood Stable and will be the 8 th Kentucky Derby starter for the partnershi p. His career record stands at 6-1-3-1 and he has amassed a bankroll of 271,135. Palace Malice will have blinkers added and the services of Hall of Fame pilot Mike Smith for the 1 st time when he runs for the roses. Todd Pletcher stated that he was expecting a breakthou gh performanc e from his charge in G2 Louisiana Derby on 3/30 and the son of Curlin looked like he might deliver when making a strong middle move. Instead, he found himself caught behind tiring leaders and was blocked from the quarter pole to the furlong marker. Having gotten little out of this race and no Kentucky Derby qualifying points, owner Dogwood Stable may send him to the G1 Blue Grass S. at Keeneland on 4/13 in a final attempt to earn a spot to run for the roses.
