His wife is Liliana. They have two sons Edgar Jr. and Luis and a sweet young daughter Patricia. His father was a reputed trainer in Peru while his brother Jorge is a former jockey and now a trainer in Maryland. His another brother Anibal rides at Philadelphia Park.

Through Dec. 31, 2006, he was second in the nation in earnings with 19,765,013. He secured 248 wins from 1,302 mounts till Dec. 31, 2006. He was a leading rider in Peru before coming to the United States as a contract rider for trainer Manny Azpurua in Florida in 1986. He is the recipient of 1990 Federico Tesio Achievement Award and won the Young Jockeys World Championship at Japan s Nakayama Race Course in March 1994. Prado led the nation in victories three consecutive years, 1997 (536), 1998 (470) and 1999 (402). His 536 in 97 made him the fourth rider to win 500 races in one year. He came down from Maryland to New York in 1999 to ride for trainer John Kimmel when regular jockey Richard Migliore was seriously injured. He captured his first New York Racing Association riding title at the 2000 Belmont Park Fall Championship Meet with 38 wins. In 2002, he stopped Triple Crown contender War Emblem by winning with Sarava, in the process setting a stakes record for highest win mutuel at 142.50. In 2004, he teamed with Nick Zito trainee Birdstone to end Smarty Jones hopes for a Triple Crown.
