Turf runners take center stage this weekend in the 1st leg of Arlington s Mid-America Triple that continues with the 200,000 G3 American Derby on 7/12 and concludes with the 500,000 G1 Secretariat Stakes on 8/16. The only Triple Crown nominees in the field, Solitary Ranger and Chief Barker, break side-by-side from the two inside posts. G3 Arlington-Washington Futurity and John Battaglia Memorial S. winner Solitary Ranger unsuccessfully tried the Triple Crown trail and needs to rebound from consecutive dull efforts. He was victorious in his only grass start, an optional claiming contest at Fair Grounds. Chief Barker, who had three wins from four grass starts in Great Britain last year, made his U.S. debut on the 1 st Saturday in May with an 8 th -place finish in the G2 American Turf S. on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Tiger Bourbon will be making his seasonal debut following a juvenile campaign that ended with an allowance score on good turf at Churchill Downs in late October. Long On Value began his career with three straight juvenile victories, including two stakes, but hasn t had his picture taken since. He exits a respectable 4 th in the American Turf. Ry s The Man has hit the board in six of eight starts and enters this off a runner-up finish in a turf sprint at Keeneland. Rankhasprivileges was last seen finishing up the track behind 2-year-old champion Shared Belief in the G1 CashCall Futurity over Betfair Hollywood Park s synthetic main track. The son of versatile Einstein will be making his grass debut. Filly Istanford made a winning career debut on this course and will face boys for the 1 st time with a five pound weight allowance. She was 2 nd last out in the grassy Edgewood S. at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Oaks card. Afortable also broke his maiden when beginning his career on this surface and rallied for an upset victory in a tough allowance race at Keeneland one month ago.
