Excelsior is a latin word which means Upward, ever upward, .The Excelsior Handicap is an American thoroughbred horse race that takes place in Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens in the spring time every year. This is one of the oldest racing events and is restricted to three year olds and is contested for a distance of one mile and one furlong. It carries a purse of 200,000. Earlier this race was run in old Jamaica racetrack between the years 1903 to 1910 and later again from 1915 to 1959. Belmont Park was its location in 1913. The event did not take place in the years 1909, 1911, 1912, 1914, 1933, and 1967.
