Notes:
Eight newly-turned sophomores race one mile in the first Derby of 2013. Undefeated TAM invader Purple Egg stretches out for the first time and has been firing morning bullets. Ontario-bred Star Contender won the restricted Cup and Saucer S. at WO in October then was best of the rest in that track s Coronation Futurity. Mark Casse s charge will make his dirt debut and looks to have handled it fine in PMM works. Trainer Wes Ward s well-traveled Undrafted shows declining BRIS Speed Ratings in each of his three starts but is stakes-placed on the BHP Cushion Track. He also tries dirt for the first time. Uptown Anthem has finished third in each of his three stakes attempts, all at CRC. Sr. Quisqueyano flashed early brilliance, running his record to three-for-three and winning the Seacliff S. before being a bridesmaid in his next three stakes tries. Itsmyluckyday motored late for a close fourth in the grassy Dania Beach S. here and has two stakes victories on his resume. Joshua s Comprise just missed in the CRC s Affirmed S. in August, but has been going in the wrong direction lately. Only a maiden winner, Almost English is the least accomplished in the field, but the Zito barn has been clicking on all cylinders lately and singer Toby Keith s runner must be respected.
