Notes:
California-bred sophomores take to the turf in this stakes named for the multiple graded stakes winner and 1986 Eclipse Award-winning Champion 3-year-old Male. Recent stakes winners Richard s Boy and Grazen Sky figure to take much of the support at the windows. The former has beaten open company on the grass in both attempts, including the May 2 Desert Code S. over Santa Anita s downhill turf course. However, Richard s Boy will be stretching out beyond that 6 frac12 F distance for the first time. Grazen Sky has only faced fellow statebreds and his never been out of the exacta in six starts. He exits a nice score in the grassy Silky Sullivan S. at Golden Gate Fields last month. Pulmarack was second to Grazen Sky in the Silky Sullivan and has two other runner-up efforts in statebred stakes. Zinvor has hit the board in five of eight attempts, including a third-place finish a neck behind Richard s Boy in an optional claimer in mid-March. The Tribal Rule gelding enters this off an early April allowance win against Cal-bred on this surface. Rocko s Wheel closed impressively to take a statebred optional claiming event on Santa Anita s main track last out and will be trying turf for the first time in his four career races. Chief Of State, the only Triple Crown nominee in the field, was best of the rest behind Rocko s Wheel in that April 26 contest and will also be making his grass debut. Cardiac broke his maiden last August but is winless in eight other starts. The son of Papa Clem does have three show finishes, including one in the Silky Sullivan. Temple Keys needed five races to get his picture taken but did so on this oval. He was drubbed by open company in the Pasadena S. two back and last of six while less than four lengths behind Grazen Sky in the Silky Sullivan. Neveradoubt won at first asking on synthetic at Del Mar in November then was up the Santa Anita main track in the Cal Cup Derby in late January. He was never involved when last seen finishing seventh of eight behind Richard s Boy in a mid-March downhill turf optional claimer. Maiden winner Book Thirty Four will be facing winners for the first time and showed nothing in his only grass race. Maiden Over Par looks overmatched and has never threatened in any of his three races.
