Notes: Though trainer Carla Gaines considers this son of Temple City to be a better turf runner, Bolo performed well enough on dirt to earn a shot at running for the roses. The colt raced exclusivel y on grass as a juvenile, finishing fifth in his career debut at Del Mar before breaking his maiden there on November 29 and capturing Santa Anita s Eddie Logan four weeks later. Switched to the main track to launch his sophomore season, Bolo had consecutiv e show finishes behind Dortmund in the G2 San Felipe S. and the G1 Santa Anita Derby, both on the Arcadia, Cal. oval. In the latter, the colt stalked wide and passed rivals to secure third while covering the 1 1/8m in 1 50.0 and earning a 98 BRIS Speed Rating, four points below his career best of 102 in the Eddie Logan. Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrif t Farm, LLC, the dark bay is out of the Chief Seattle mare Aspen Mountain and was foaled on February 19, 2012. Campaigned by Golden Pegasus Racing, Inc. and Earle I. Mack, Bolo has banked 249,700 with his 5-2-0-2 record. With 30 qualifying points, he ranked 19 th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboar d the day before the draw. Jockey Rafael Bejarano will be aboard Bolo for the first time in Louisville as Mike Smith, who was in the irons for four of his five races, sticks with Far Right. Bolo ran a particular ly wide race in the Santa Anita Derby but managed to both show and showed some toughness fighting off Prospect Park and Cross The Line. While I don t really see him as a win bet, I can see him being used in many exotics for Kentucky Derby wagering purposes to round out some Trifecta s and Superfecta wagers.
