Notes: Citation is the eighth American Triple Crown champion and one of two major North American thoroughbr eds to capture sixteen winning titles in a row in top-level competitio n. Citation was owned and bred by Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. It was a bay colt, son of Bull Lea and the mare, Hydroplane . Citation was originally ridden by Al Snider and later by Steve brooks and Eddie Arcaro and was trained by hall of Famer Ben Jones and his son Horace A Jones. At debut he broke the Arlington Park track record at 5 furlongs in his second start. He started 1948 racing season with two victories. By the end of his three-year -old season, Citation had a career record of twenty-sev en victories and two seconds in twenty-nin e starts and was named Horse of the Year. Though injuries kept him out of the race in most of the time of 1949, he returned to racing in the following year 1950 to win his sixteenth race in a row at Santa Anita Park. At six, in 1951, Citation returned to racing field with victories in the Century Handicap, American Handicap and finally in the Hollywood Gold Cup. He was retired after that racing. As a sire at Calumet Farm, he has produced a number of noteworthy offspring including Hall of Fame filly Silver Spoon and 1956 Preakness Stakes winner Fabius.
