Notes: This Bob Baffert trainee ran his record to a perfect three-for- three and remained AllHorseRa cing s Kentucky Derby future book favorite with a thrilling victory in the December 20 G1 Los Alamitos Futurity. Dortmund was sent to post as the 3-5 favorite against just four rivals in the Futurity, which was run at Los Alamitos for the first time after originatin g at Hollywood Park in 1981. Ridden in his two-turn debut by regular pilot Martin Garcia, the colt tracked Firing Line and Mr. Z through fast fractions and wore them down right before the wire of the long stretch to get the photo. Dortmund, who was supplement ed to the Futurity for 20,000, covered the 1 1/16m in 1 40.86 and was given a 97 BRIS Speed Rating, one point below the career best 98 he earned in a 1m Churchill Downs allowance on November 29. The son of 2008 Kentucky Derby champ Big Brown began his career on November 2 with an easy 6 frac12 F maiden score at Santa Anita. Bred in Kentucky by Emilie Gerlinde Fojan, the chestnut is out of Our Josephina, a daughter of Tale of the Cat, and was foaled on February 7, 2012. Originally offered at auction as a weanling in the Keeneland 2012 November Breeding Stock Sale, Dortmund failed to meet his reserve. The colt sold for 90,000 the following year at the Fasig-Tipt on Kentucky July Yearling Sale then again for 140,000 at the Fasig-Tipt on Midlantic 2014 Two-Year-O lds in Training Sale. He has banked 359,400 for owner Kaleem Shah, Inc., who named him for a German soccer team. Dortmund picked up 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points in the Futurity and now sits tied in eighth with Daredevil on the leaderboar d to run for the roses next May. Baffert indicated that his charge could make his sophomore debut in the 150,000 G2 Robert B. Lewis S. in early February at Santa Anita.
