Notes: This son of Notional couldn t add a third straight stakes score to his resume when champion American Pharoah invaded from California to run away with the G1 Arkansas Derby on April 11 at Oaklawn Park, but his runner-up finish secured Far Right a spot in the Churchill Downs starting gate on the first Saturday in May. With Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard once again, the ridgling took his customary spot well off the early pace in the eight-hors e field and remained there until roused turning for home, at which point he advanced and closed well to wind up eight lengths behind the winner. The Ron Moquett trainee covered the 1 1/8m in 1 50.1 and duplicated the 93 BRIS Speed Rating he earned when winning the G3 Southwest S. on this oval in February. The Arkansas Derby upped Far Right s career earnings to 625,766 and vaulted him to 10 th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboar d with a total of 62 qualifying points. Far Right raced exclusivel y in stakes after breaking his maiden in his third attempt last September at Churchill Downs. He followed that with a fourth-pla ce run in the G2 Futurity at Belmont Park then completed the trifecta in Churchill s Street Sense S. and the G3 Delta Jackpot at Delta Downs to conclude his two-year-o ld season. Smith took the reins to kick off his sophomore campaign, and the pair captured Oaklawn s Smarty Jones S. in January before reuniting for the Southwest win. Bred in Kentucky by Nossab LLC and Patrick J. Crowley, the chestnut is out of the Vindicatio n mare Zindi and was foaled on March 4, 2012. Jon Jazdzewski originally purchased him for 2,500 at the Keeneland 2013 January Horses of All Ages Sale, and Far Right had two runner-up efforts while racing with his silks for trainer William Helmbrecht . Arkansas resident Harry Rosenblum then privately acquired Far Right and moved him to conditione r Ron Moquett s barn. Owner Robert LaPenta purchased a minority interest prior to the Smarty Jones and Smith wore his colors in that victory before donning Rosenblum s for the Southwest and Arkansas Derby. Rosenblum won a coin flip with LaPenta to have Far Right run for the roses in his silks and Moquett said Smith is likely to be in the irons on May 2. Far Right was flown to Louisville on April 13 and bedded down in Moquett s Churchill Downs barn to prepare for the Derby.
