He is a Hall of Fame jockey in American thoroughbred horse racing. He holds the record for most races won by a jockey in a single year in 1989. He began his career as an apprentice jockey at the age of sixteen. As a professional jockey he won his first career stakes in December 1986 at the Laurel Park Racecourse. He moved to the Maryland racing circuit shortly afterwards and his performances earned him the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 1987. In 1989 he set the record for most wins in a year and also won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey.

His wife is Sonia and they have two sons Joshua and Jacob. His brother Keith is a trainer on the Texas-Louisiana circuit.
