Horses To Watch

Kentuckian:

This late-blooming son of two-time G1 Breeders' Cup Classic champion Tiznow will bypass the Triple Crown like his sire did in 2000, but Kentuckian just might turn out to be one of the best in his division. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee began his career on March 7 with a front-running 11-length laugher in a Golden Gate Fields sprint under Northern California kingpin Russell Baze. He stepped up into stakes company a little more than a month later when sent to post as the odds-on favorite in Santa Anita's 6F listed San Pedro S. but couldn't overcome a slow start and troubled trip when third with Rafael Bejarano in the irons. Four weeks later, the colt became a graded stakes winner when Mike Smith piloted him to a decisive 6 ¼-length victory in Santa Anita's G3 Lazaro Barrera S. Kentuckian finished the 7F contest in 1:20.97 and was awarded a career best 100 Beyer Speed Figure for his romp. Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, the flashy looking gray/roan is out of the Unbridled's Song mare Forest Music and was foaled on February 2, 2012. Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms, Inc. bought Kentuckian for $610,000 at the Keeneland 2013 September Yearling Sale, and he has earned back $85,080 towards his purchase price. Hollendorfer indicated he may try to stretch the colt out in Santa Anita's $100,000 Affirmed S. at 1 1/16m on June 7.

American Pharoah

The much-antic ipated sophomore debut of the Eclipse Award-winn ing Champion 2-Year-Old Male proved to be worth the wait when this Zayat Stables homebred simply dazzled in the G2 Rebel S. on March 14 at Oaklawn Park. Despite displacing a front show in a bobbled start, American Pharoah took six rivals gate-to-wi re on a track downgraded to sloppy and won by 6 1/4 lengths under a hand ride from Victor Espinoza. The colt crossed the wire in the 1 1/16m race in 1 45.78 and was given a 99 BRIS Speed Rating, four points lower than his career top of 103 in last year s G1 Del Mar Futurity on September 3. The Rebel was the Bob Baffert trainee s first race since September 27 when he used a similar front-runn ing style to take the G1 FrontRunne r S. at Santa Anita. The lone blemish on American Pharoah s resume came in his career debut when he finished fifth of nine as the favorite in an August 9 Del Mar maiden contest. Bred in Kentucky, the bay is by Zayat s 2009 Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile and out of the Yankee Gentleman mare Littleprin cessemma. He was foaled on February 2, 2012, and currently sits at fifth on the Kentucky Derby leaderboar d with a total of 60 qualifying points. The Rebel score upped his career earnings to 811,500 and American Pharoah could top the 1 million mark in his final prep to run for the roses, which is likely to be in the G1 Arkansas Derby on April 11 at Oaklawn.

Friday May 22
