The 147th running of the Grade 1  Belmont Stakes  is the third jewel of the Triple Crown, held at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 6, with first-race post at noon. NBC will provide live coverage of the day's events.

Belmont Stakes Race Information: The Belmont Stakes is the third race of the Triple Crown of Horse Racing and is considered to be the most intense and most difficult of the three races to win. Run at a length of 1.5 Miles, it is the longest of race of the Triple Crown.

Belmont Stakes History: The Belmont Stakes was first raced at Jerome Park from 1867 to 1889 and has had Aqueduct and Morris Park as temporary hosts venues. In 1905, Belmont Park was opened in Elmont, New York by August Belmont Sr. and aside from a stint of betting prohibition from 1910 to 1912 and then a during a renovation from 1963-1967, Belmont Park has remained as the host venue for the third jewed of the Triple Crown.

The Belmont is the oldest of the three Triple Crown events. The Belmont predates the Preakness by six years, the Kentucky Derby by eight. The first running of the Belmont Stakes was in 1867 at Jerome Park and believe it or not, it was run on a Thursday. At a mile and five furlongs, the original conditions for entry included an fee of $200 where half would lossed if a horse was to forfeit. The Belmont Stakes is not only the oldest Triple Crown race, but it is the fourth oldest horse race in North America. The Phoenix Stakes, now run in the fall at Keeneland as the Phoenix Breeders' Cup, was first run in 1831. The Queen's Plate in Canada made its debut in 1860, while the Travers in Saratoga opened in 1864. However, since there were gaps in sequence for the Travers, the Belmont is third only to the Phoenix and Queen's Plate in total runnings.

2014 Belmont Stakes Preview

Ten rivals have been entered to try to spoil dual classic champ California Chrome's bid to become the 12 th Triple Crown winner in history. By all accounts, the Art Sherman trainee is coming into his date with destiny perfectly and appears well-prepared both physically and mentally for the challenge. His jockey, Victor Espinoza, will try to prepare himself for the task by riding on Belmont Park's 1 1/2m oval before the Test of the Champion and will even have the opportunity to go the Belmont distance when he takes the mount on Ever Rider in the G2 Brooklyn Invitational earlier on Saturday's card. G1 Preakness S. runner-up Ride On Curlin and 4 th -place finisher General a Rod are the only other entrants to have competed in all three legs of the series. The former will have his 5 th jockey in as many races as Hall of Famer John Velazquez takes over for Joel Rosario. The colt is coming off a career best 103 BRIS Speed Rating but hasn't found the winner's circle since a 6f sprint allowance at Oaklawn Park in January. General a Rod had troubled trips in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and will be reunited with jockey Rosie Napravnik, who was aboard for his winning career debut last October. Commanding Curve tops a quartet in here who ran in the Derby but skipped the Preakness. He was one of the few in Louisville to have a clean trip and closed from the clouds for a good 2 nd while never threatening California Chrome. Wicked Strong encountered problems right from his stumbling start under the Twin Spires and put forth a huge effort to complete the superfecta from the extreme outside post. Samraat survived trouble of his own in the Derby and was nosed out for the 4 th -place photo. He figures to be forwardly-placed early and won his only start over this course in his initial outing. Medal Count also had traffic issues in Kentucky before checking in 8 th in the Run for the Roses. He generated plenty of chatter with a sharp appearance before the Derby and sports consecutive bullet works at Churchill Downs for his return. G2 Peter Pan S. hero Tonalist looks like the biggest threat to California Chrome of the four in here who didn't race in the Derby or Preakness. His 107 BRIS Speed Rating earned in that contest is the highest such number in the field but questions remain as to whether he was aided by the sloppy surface that day. Commissioner was no match for Tonalist when finishing four lengths behind him in 2 nd in the Peter Pan, but trainer Todd Pletcher has been pointing his charge to this since he rounded out the trifecta in the G1 Arkansas Derby in mid-April. Pletcher will also be represented by maiden winner Matterhorn, who was a well-beaten fourth in the Peter Pan. Matuszak, winless in seven starts since breaking his maiden at 1 st asking last September, exits a 2 nd -place finish in Pimlico's Federico Tesio S. in April and would be a huge surprise if victorious here.
