Notes:
There s no Triple Crown on the line in the 145 th running of the G1 Belmont Stakes, but a rematch between Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness hero Oxbow, combined with 12 other sophomores, makes for a sensational betting race. And the likelihood of an off track only adds to the puzzle. Orb, the 3/1 morning line favorite, is proven over a sloppy surface on the first Saturday in May. But his dull effort in Baltimore when a well-beaten 4 th to Oxbow gives cause for concern. And Oxbow, a remarkable 6 th in the Derby despite being close to a blistering early pace, surely won t get loose on the lead again like he did in the middle jewel. Oxbow s stablemate, Will Take Charge, who finished 8 th in the Derby, is the only other entrant who also competed in the first two legs of the series. He ll reunite with pilot Jon Court after Mike Smith rode him to a 7 th -place finish in Maryland. Derby runner up Golden Soul tops the group of seven who bypassed the Preakness to take a fresh shot in New York. The Dallas Stewart trainee needed the break, having been slow to recover from a tough effort under the Twin Spires. Revolutionary, who was ridden up the rail by Calvin Borel to a 3 rd -place finish in Kentucky, regains the services of New York-based jockey Javier Castellano, who was aboard for his two graded stakes victories. Like Orb, he should benefit from an off track. Giant Finish surprised trainer Tony Dutrow by beating half the Derby field and earned a career best BRIS Speed Rating of 97 in the process. Overanalyze, one of three in the field for the Todd Pletcher/Repole Stable trainer/owner combo, gets John Velasquez back in the saddle after running 11 th in the Derby under Raphael Bejerano. Surprising Derby pacesetter Palace Malice sheds the blinkers after running off then dropping anchor last out. Frac Daddy, a dull 16 th in Kentucky, was a late addition to the Belmont after conditioner McPeek opted for this spot over an allowance. Vyjack, who beat only one horse in the Run for the Roses, will try to rebound with Julien Leparoux in the irons for the 1 st time. Unlimited Budget bids to become the 2 nd Pletcher-trained filly to win the Test of the Champion after Rags to Riches took the 2007 edition. Unlike her predecessor who won the Kentucky Oaks beforehand, this daughter of Street Sense could only manage 3 rd in that race and doesn t have nearly the stamina breeding on her dam s side. G2 Peter Pan S. victor Freedom Child has impressed onlookers with his pre-race preparations and would relish another off track like he had in his romp four weeks ago. Incognito was well behind Freedom Child in 5 th that day and would seem up against it if not for his stamina breeding and red-hot barn. Maiden winner Midnight Taboo, however, appears to be the unlikeliest of winners and the decision to jump in the deep end was made by owner Repole rather than Pletcher.

The Belmont Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse racing event that is run each year covering a distance of twelve furlongs on the left handed dirt track of Belmont Park Racetrack. This grade I stakes is open to three year old horses. The Belmont stakes is widely known as the Run for the Carnations a white blanket of carnations is draped over the winner s neck. The post parade song was Sidewalks of New York till 1996 and from the next year the custom changed a little bit. The audience was invited to sing the Theme from New York and the tradition reflects the signing of two other songs at two Triple Crown races My Old Kentucky Home at the Kentucky Derby and My Maryland at the Preakness Stakes. Jerome Park Racetrack in The Bronx used to organize the Belmont Stakes during the initial years. Built in 1866 by stock market speculator Leonard Jerome, the race was financed by August Belmont for whom the Belmont Stakes was named. In due course of years, the race shifted to another spot Morris Park Racecourse until the May 1905 the grand opening of the new Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, New York. Between 1911 and 1912, the race was closed as anti-betting legislation was passed in the New York State. The tradition of offering a silver bowl to the winner owner began since 1926. That beautiful silver memento was created by Louis Comfort Tiffany and donated to the organizers by the Belmont family. A slick silver figure of Fenian winner of the third running of the Belmont Stakes in 1869 is at the top of the Belmont trophy and the bowl is supported by three horses Herod, Eclipse and Matchem representing three foundation sires of the thoroughbred world. The Belmont stakes was run at a mile and five furlongs from 1867 to 1873 1 mile in 1890, 1891, 1892, 1895, 1904 and 1905 a mile and a furlong in 1893 and 1894 a mile and thee furlongs from 1896 to 1903 and from 1906 to 1925. At present the distance is a mile and half and it came in force in 1926. Belmont Stakes offers a purse of 1,000,000.
