Canterbury Park History
Canterbury Downs opened in 1985 after Minnesotans voted to allow pari-mutuel betting in the state. Canterbury Downs was bought by Ladbroke Racing Corporation in 1990 and was renamed New Canterbury Downs. Due to unspecified reasons, this racetrack closed its doors in December, 1992. Later, Canterbury Downs was taken over by Irwin Jacobs, who again sold it to Randy Sampson. Canterbury started live horse racing from 1994 and the official name of the ground was changed to Canterbury Park in 1994.
