He is an American jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. Melancon won his first race in 1984 at Evangeline Downs and in the next two years he became one of the most promising jockeys. But his career took a downward move from 1986 when got into problems with alcohol and drug addiction. In 2002-03 he won back to back titles at Louisiana Downs and in 2003 he ranked 13th in terms of the races won. He won his 3,000th race on April 19, 2007 at Evangeline Downs.
