With no Kentucky Derby qualifying races on tap this weekend, sophomore sprinters take center stage in this G2 event that could produce a starter in next month s G1 Florida Derby. Daredevil and Souper Colossal are the Triple Crown nominees in the field and the former is the one to beat if he can duplicate the form displayed as a juvenile when breaking his maiden and winning the G1 Champagne S. But the More Than Ready colt hasn t been seen since finishing last and 26 lengths behind Texas Red in the G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita and could be vulnerable here. Souper Colossal was also unbeaten when he entered the Juvenile but could only manage a distant seventh-place finish. After a brief freshening, Souper Colossal took the grassy 5F Texas Glitter S. at Gulfstream Park three weeks ago. X Y Jet has but one win in eight starts, but the gelding has only been out of the money once. He just missed to highly-regarded Catalina Red when closing out his 2-year-old season in the Pasco S. at Tampa Bay Downs then gave the now sidelined Barbados all he could handle in the G3 Hutcheson S. at this track and distance last month. Ready for Rye also has a runner-up effort behind Barbados, having been best of the rest in the Jan. 3 Spectacular Bid S. here. He s been pointed to this spot since and will try to heat up the cold Tom Albertrani barn. Twotwentyfive A has competed in six consecutive stakes since breaking his maiden on this oval in early August. However, the Jacks Or Better Farm homebred hasn t had his picture taken since winning the restricted Affirmed S. in his next start. Senor Grits tries another furlong , following four 6F races, two of which he won. Grand Bili whipped some well-bred rivals in his only start, a 5 1/2F Gulfstream dash on Feb. 1, and gets a serious class test in the Swale against far more experienced foes.
