The 1 million G1 Florida Derby is the first race to award 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner and guarantee a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May. A trio of proven contenders - Itsmyluckyday, Shanghai Bobby and Orb - appear to tower above the rest and it is difficult to imagine others will crash this exacta party. Itsmyluckyday is 2-for-2 over this strip, having won the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year s Day and G3 Holy Bull on 1/25. Shanghai Bobby, the 2-year-old Eclipse Award winner, suffered his only loss in six starts with a runner up finish in the Holy Bull and trainer Todd Pletcher is optimistic about his chances despite the rail post. With the Holy Bull top two sitting out, Orb made the most of it when easily taking the G2 Fountain of Youth S. on 2/23. Frac Daddy looked like a major player in the division when running 2 nd to Uncaptured at Churchill Downs but flopped when grabbing a a quarter early in the Holy Bull. Pick of the Litter is an intriguing maiden winner from the Dale Romans barn. Stablemate Pontiff has yet to get his picture taken but could take money in light of recent world events. Indy s Illusion has shown flashes of ability but confounded his connections with dull morning efforts. Nevertheless, he s a logical for the exotics. Speedball Merit Man will need to use everything he s got to get over from the 8 post position and stretch out for the 1 st time. Are You Kidding Me finished well to lose the bob in a Tampa Bay Downs allowance to a winner headed to Keeneland s G1 Blue Grass Stakes. Narvaez, the subject of many private purchase rumors after his dead-heat win with Triple Crown nominee Declan s Warrior here, breaks from the disadvantageous outside post.
