Notes:
Eight newly-turned sophomores jump on the road to the Kentucky Derby in the 1 st qualifying points race of 2014 and New York s 1 st graded stakes of the year for the division. A total of 17 Derby points are up for grabs and will be awarded on a 10-4-2-1 basis to the top four finishers. G2 Nashua S. 3 rd -place finisher Noble Moon has been installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite off that effort. He was flattered when the winner of that, Cairo Prince, just missed to the highly-regarded Honor Code in the G2 Remsen S. Noble Moon himself was entered in the Remsen but was forced to scratch after having an allergic reaction the night before the race. Master Lightning raced in both the Nashua and Remsen but showed little in each. He rebounded with a score in an optional claimer on 12/22 over this course. Matuszak is unraced since checking in a well-beaten 6 th in the Remsen. He broke his maiden 1 st out at Churchill Downs in September but hasn t hit the board in three races since. Mental Iceberg beat fellow New York breds on the grass in his debut then finished up the track in last in the Remsen. Marylander S. show finisher Classic Giacnroll will stretch out for the 1 st time after beginning his career with five sprint races. He picks up the services of Alex Solis, who previously rode Noble Moon. Laurel Park debut winner Lawmaker invades from his winter base in South Florida. He s a half-brother to multiple stakes hero Last Gunfighter and displayed the same late-running style as his sibling when breaking his maiden. Scotland is winless in two starts but finished a good 2 nd in both of those. Pin and Win broke his maiden in a MC 25000 and has been trounced in two subsequent races, most recently the Don Rickles overnight stakes on 12/21 here.

The Jerome Handicap is an American grade II thoroughbred horseracing event that is run each year at one mile on the dirt track of Belmont Park. This race is open for three years old horses. Jerome Handicap is the second oldest stakes race in the country and it is named for Leonard W Jerome, the founder of the old Jerome Park in The Bronx. In this racetrack, Eddie Arcaro rode the great Kelso and clinched victory in 1960. The Jerome was run for the first time at Jerome Park between 1866 and 1889 and then it was moved to Morris Park. From 1905 onwards, the race used to take place at Aqueduct Race Track. Between 1910 and 1913, the race did not take place and the distance was set at two miles from 1871 to 1877. The Jerome Handicap used to take place at a mile and quarter in 1893, 1894 and from 1896 to 1909 while it was a mile and a furlong in 1895.
