The 141st Run for the Roses attracted a stellar field of 22 sophomores in what is widely considered one of the strongest groups ever assembled on the first Saturday in May. The scratch of Stanford on April 30 allowed also-eligible entrant Frammento to draw into the field and fellow AE Tale of Verve needs a defection by 9:00 a.m. on May 1 to get a spot in the gate. From the rail out, here's a look at the field. Ocho Ocho Ocho has gone off form since concluding his unbeaten juvenile campaign with a victory in the G3 Delta Downs Jackpot. The son of 2007 Kentucky Derby champ Street Sense has not impressed onlookers with his morning exercises under the twin spires and appears hopelessly overmatched and up against it from the undesirable rail post. Multiple graded stakes hero Carpe Diem has only one blemish on his five-race resume and that was a runner-up effort in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He'll have to overcome a tough inside post but could be ready for a big performance in his third start off the layoff. Undefeated G1 Florida Derby champ Materiality will try to become the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win the Derby without having raced as a 2-year-old. Trainer Todd Pletcher hopes his talent can overcome his inexperience, and the colt will need to use his speed to secure position early and not get trapped on the inside. G1 Wood Memorial place finisher Tencendur is a late-developing son of Warrior's Reward who is getting good at the right time. A repeat of his Wood performance would put him squarely in the mix. Danzig Moon has impressed spectators with his works at Churchill Downs and owns a solid race over this course as a juvenile. His only poor performance was a distant fourth in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby, a race he exited with an infection. G2 UAE Derby victor Mubtaahij is the wild card with handicappers , who must try to ascertain the caliber of competition he beat in Dubai. He looked sensational romping in that 1 3/16m contest and is trained by one of the world's best in Mike de Kock. The remarkably consistent El Kabeir has only been off the board once in nine starts. He'll be reunited with three-time Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel, who piloted him to victory in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill last November.Dortmund will try to run his record to a perfect seven for seven and already has a victory on this oval. The massive son of 2008 Derby winner Big Brown should be able to withstand the bumping and jostling that typically occurs in the Derby. Bolo was no match for Dortmund when third in both the G2 San Felipe Stakes and G1 Santa Anita Derby and is clearly better on grass. He loses jockey Mike Smith to Far Right. After two head losses to Dortmund, Firing Line shipped to Sunland Park and dusted an overmatched bunch in the G3 Sunland Derby. He figures to be involved in the early pace. International Star puts his three race win streak on the line and needs to move forward again to stretch that to four. He's shown a willingness to fight through traffic that will likely prove essential here. Itsaknockout showed nothing when drubbed in the G1 Florida Derby and has declining BRIS Speed Ratings in each of his last three starts. Late-running Keen Ice was a big disappointment when a non-threatening fourth in the G2 Louisiana Derby but is well-bred for the distance and should be motoring late when others are stopping. Frosted quit after appearing to have the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in hand but comes off a career best effort in winning the Wood Memorial. He'll be a big factor in this outcome if he can duplicate that. War Story has finished behind International Star in all three of his races this year and would need to make a significant step forward to have his picture taken. Mr. Z punched his ticket to Louisville with a third-place finish in the G1 Arkansas Derby. He has appeared lethargic in the mornings and looks like a horse who needs a break. Morning line favorite American Pharoah is the only entrant other than Materiality to have never faced a double digit field size. The Bob Baffert trainee has clockers gushing and tabbing him as a serious threat to sweep the classics. Upstart appears to have recovered from an infection last month but now must overcome a far outside post position. Deep closer Far Right should not be seriously impacted by his outside post but just doesn't seem fast enough to contend for top honors. Trainer Nick Zito's patience was rewarded when Frammento drew into the field and the Hall of Famer believes his charge will relish the mile and a quarter. While a victory seems unlikely, Frammento has the look of a very live longshot for exotics. Recent maiden winner Tale of Verve was a surprise entrant and would be equally stunning if he landed in the winner's circle. But trainer Dallas Stewart has sent out longshots to complete the Derby exacta in each of the last two years.
